History

In 1995 Los Angeles, you could find just bout anything, from kids lining the streets to buy the first Sony PlayStations, to Hugh Grant making headlines after an encounter with Devine Brown. You could even find O.J. Simpson "not guilty"! Yet somehow, even in the "anything goes" town of L.A., 22-year-old Dineh Mohajer just could not find the right shade of nail polish to match her strappy blue sandals.

Taking matters into her own hands, the original Hard Candy Girl custom mixed her own polish, creating the perfect baby blue shade, Sky. With the ensuing flood of compliments on the unusual polish, Dineh's mission was clear. Perhaps it was the disturbing lack of girliness in the current grunge trend; whatever the reason, it was apparent that the world was ready to be sweet on Hard Candy.

The infamous polish was initially sold n L.A.'s most exculsive boutiques, the very first being prestigious retailer, Fred Segal. It was there that, upon arrival of the four sample bottles: Sky, Sunshine, Mint, and Violet, a young shopper caused a scene, demanding that her mother purchase the samples on the spot. The inevitable result was Hard Candy's first order for 200 bottles.

The fresh new beauty brand was off to a great start. Add one Alicia Silverstone gushing about her Hard Candy manicure while gabbing with David Letterman about her debut in Clueless, and you have an unbeatable recipe for sweet success.

Today, more than a decade after starting a nail rage with the launch of its playful polish collection, the Hard Candy line no features over 150 beauty staples, all supremely designed and delectably packaged.
