Community defined essentially refers to a group of people that share something in common, such as a city of residence or mutual interests held by a specific group. The networks of people we interact with form the communities that we are a part of.
Our participation within our own communities is a crucial, intrinsic human need. Without each other, we lose something called “community cultural competence,” as quoted by Greer Sullivan, M.D., M.S.P.H. writing about the psychological trauma one experiences as a result of devastation caused by hurricanes. The premise of this notion is that we need each other in order to survive.
