If you are using Aftereffects to convert a movie in another format to MPEG2:

 

Note:

 Aftereffects will read a lot of different file types but not everything.

If the first part works (opening the file) then the rest should work.

  

1. Open Aftereffects.

 

2. From the File menu select Import/File and select the movie file to convert. It will appear in the Project window.

 

3. Follow the instructions for: If you are rendering an MPEG2 file from an Aftereffects project.

Note: In steps A and B you will be selecting and adding the movie file (as opposed to the composition) to the Render Queue.
