Artist’s Statement - Fall 2005

We live in a world increasingly saturated by human life. Urban sprawl destroys the country side; massive storms, built up by our destruction of the environment, flatten cities; whole communities breathe toxic air; and everywhere we are surrounded by flashing, mind numbing images, sounds, and other forms of media. Now that we have conquered the wilderness, we feel that it is all right to destroy that which sustains us, starting and ending with our individual selves.
As we alienate ourselves from our environment and each other, we press closer and closer to the destruction of our sustaining structures. Each stroke is a moment in time, ticking closer to that moment, marked off like the tempo in an ever-increasing chorus of over saturation. I paint to record the pulse of the world and what I see occurring around me. Someone must make a mark, and pass it on for others to see.
